I really enjoy good Cajun food, but I have to admit I am a Cajun food snob. Every summer I have been able to take a three day weekend jaunt to New Orleans. Summer is not the high tourist time due to the heat. I have been afforded the privilege to have some special tastings with some of the wonderful chefs in NOLA. These experiences have given some pretty high expectations for any Cajun restaurant.
When we arrived we realized that this location had previously been a so so Vietnamese restaurant. I had liked their banh mi sandwiches but the rest of the menu was dicey. Both my husband and myself took notice of the change in decor and overall feel of the restaurant. We were greeted and seated promptly.
After perusing the menu, we decided to try an odd Cajun appetizer fried mushrooms with ranch dip. I cannot lie they were delicious regardless of the odd addition to a Cajun menu. The batter was intact, the mushrooms juicy, and the ranch tasty. We proceeded to order our entrees. My husband chose the blackened chicken, I chose a bowl of seafood gumbo. My husband was very pleased with his entree. He found the chicken to be spicy, but not torch your mouth spicy. Also, the chicken was tender and juicy. Now to my gumbo. I always order my gumbo with the rice on the side. It gives me the opportunity to truly taste the soup. the gumbo had great flavor, the roux developed, the file present. My only complaint was the lack of seafood. The shrimp were very small, the crab scarce. I again being a Cajun snob, expected larger shrimp, more crab meat as well as a crab claw. Also, oysters were absent. The flavor was good, but not as hearty as I would have preferred.
Overall, I think this restaurant is worth a try, and maybe a second try to make your own determination.
