In past posts I raved on and on of my of my love of banh mi sandwiches. I love everything about them when done well.
I was a little baffled when first reading their name. The name to me references a traditional American diner. However, after entering the restaurant I became very aware of exactly why the name was chosen. The restaurant is lined with collectables of super heroes, comic book, and menga items. Not the decor you typically see in a Vietnamese restaurant. But both my table mate and myself have family members who would totally love this stuff. Totally 1980″s vibe.
So onto the menu. We started our adventure with an appetizer of Vietnamese egg rolls. I was impressed that Retro Cafe had almost all the accompanying sides that normally come with this appetizer. They tasted delicious. The fish sauce was spicy with red pepper. It gave the sauce a nice spicy flair.
Onto our entrees. My table mate had the grilled beef vermicelli. She absolutely loved her bowl. It came with their signature fish sauce which she loved the kick of the red pepper flakes. I true to form had my favorite a banh mi chicken sandwich. The grilled chicken was moist, the french bread crunchy but soft. The accompanying vegetables were consistent with the exclusion of fresh jalapeno. The fish sauce made up for the omission. It was delicious.
In conclusion I would recommenced you give this family owned joint a try. You will love every bite.
