I love Vietnamese food and have been forever searching in the Cypress/ Cy-Fair area for a spot I just cannot wait to go to again.
My dedicated table mate is always down to try anything. She loves all types of cuisine, and unlike my husband; is willing to try anything once. My amazing husband is a meat and potato kind of guy. This visit we continued our search for an amazing Vietnamese restaurant in our area.
So to start our dining experience, we decided to try the traditional Vietnamese egg rolls. For me, the best part of this appetizer is the variety of fresh herbs, crisp lettuce, and crunchy vegetables that come along with the rolls. Great fish sauce is the great dipping compliment. When our appetizer came out I have to say I felt let down. The rolls themselves were very tasty, but the accompany of vegetables were two pieces of iceberg lettuce and a small amount of matchstick carrots. My past experience at other Vietnamese restaurants have included basil, mint, bamboo shoots, carrots, cilantro, and enough iceberg lettuce for each roll ordered.
Next came our entree selections. My table mate decided to try the grilled shrimp vermicelli salad. The salad has of course vermicelli, but also variety of vegetables, and a fish sauce dressing. My friend said it was good, but that she had better. My observation was this vermicelli salad was missing some of the fresh herbs that make Vietnamese food so spectacular. For my entree I chose the grilled chicken banh mi sandwich. Banh mi is a nod to when Vietnam was a French colony. It starts with fresh french bread. I love french bread for it’s flaky, crunchy outside, but inside it light and fluffy. JB Pho & Grill had a good bread as a vessel. The inside was again disappointing. The chicken was grilled to death. Also, the vegetables again were lacking. The menu states the sandwich comes with special butter, cilantro, cucumber, jalapenos, and pickled carrots. What I received was regular carrots, (not pickled) and some cilantro on top. Let’s just say the end product was not as advertised, and needed lots of fish sauce to compensate for the dry chicken.
In final assessment JB Pho & Grill was not horrible. In my estimation they took shortcuts; that could have taken their food from OK to a place that you cannot wait to visit again.
