I love Cuban food and unfortunately I have not found many in the Cypress and Cy-Fair area.
I was one lucky gal when two of my foodie friends v0luntered to join me to try Rice and Beans. I had some reservations because the reviews were somewhat all over the place. Patrons had either an outstanding experience, or a horrible experience. My foodie friend that usually visits restaurants with me; had herself a poor experience of her own. My other foodie friend who is Colombian had not ever tried Cuban cuisine.
We were greeted promptly, had water promptly, but felt somewhat pushed to choose our lunch entree. One downside was that our waitperson did not speak much English. Thank goodness for our Colombian lunch mate to bridge some of the language barrier.
Two of us ordered the classic Ropa Vieja and the ordered the Vaca Frita. Ropa Vieja is shredded beef in a Cuban tomato sauce, served with rice, black beans, and sweet plantains. Vaca Frita is a shredded fried beef served with the same sides I mentioned above.
The Ropa Vieja was delicious, the black beans were well seasoned. The plantains and rice were textbook. However, my other foodie friend had a very different food experience. Her shredded beef was friend to death and was not offered a sauce to compliment the very dry beef.
Unfortunately I have to say the lunch menu is quite pricey. The lunch prices start at $9.95 and go as high as $22.95. Not very economical and not huge portions.
Overall, my table mates and myself decided this restaurant to be hit and miss.If you have not been there I encourage you to go and let me know what you think!
