I have stated before that I am huge fan of Greek food. When I lived inside the loop in Houston, I was a frequent visitor to Biba’s Café (now closed do to Hurricane Ike) and Niko Niko Greek and American Café. The food at both establishments are stellar!
This being said I have very high standards when it comes to Greek cuisine. I was very excited to find a Greek restaurant in my vicinity. I have a good friend that often is my tablemate when I review restaurants. She had already been to Manny’s several times and had given me glowing reviews. When we arrived the owner greeted my dining partner as a old friend, however totally ignored my existence as a new customer. I was quite offended. However; I did not let that skew my overwhelming desire for good Greek food! I ordered the medium Greek salad with gyro meat. my friend ordered the gyro platter. The food arrived promptly. My salad was a beautiful array of lettuce, Malabar spinach, tomato, and cucumber. I however was missing pepperoncini, and very few olives. The homemade vinaigrette was very good. So let’s talk about the gyro meat. The portion was very generous, but the flavor quite bland. In past experiences gyro meat is packed with spice grilled to a beautiful to a perfect slightly crispy brown. To my disappointed Manny’s gyro meat lacked both attributes. My tablemate was quite happy with her lunch, but as I stated before I have a very high standard when it comes to Greek fare.
All in all I think Manny’s is a good spot to get your Greek on, just not excellent.
