I have mentioned in previous posts am not a big raw fish fan. However; I was intrigued by Poke and Pho’s menu when I checked them out online.
Upon reading the menu I was happy to see bao on their appetizer menu. Bao is more linked with Korean cuisine, and this restaurant was leaning more toward Vietnamese cuisine. I was curious. So, the bao definitely caught my attention. When I lived “inside the loop” I was a regular at a restaurant Fat Bao, and walked out in a food heaven haze on every occasion. So, of course I had to have one. I ordered the pork bao. In addition, I ordered the serving of two pork egg rolls. The consistency of the “bread” of the bao was, fluffy, and slightly sweet. The first two small bites were great! Then however; the third bite was filled with non rendered fat. It was a gooey bite of yuck. I had to spit it out. There is not many things worse then flabby pork fat.
My next choice, the pork egg rolls arrived. When I say piping hot I am not joking. But, these were not your run of the mill Vietnamese egg rolls. These actually were more Chinese style. These beautiful rolls were stuffed with veggies and pork, served with a delicious sweet and sour sauce. I could have made a meal of just the egg rolls for the bargain price of $3.50.
My dining mate and friend LOVES spicy tuna. She is also on a Keto diet, so having multiple selection is important. The Poke portion of the menu was a dream come true. My lunch mate took advantage of the ” create your own poke” option on the menu. You have a base choice of rice, salad, or noodles. You then have a choice of 9 proteins. You have the ability to choose up to 3 selections, each costing $2.00 dollars additional from the base price of $8.95. Then you have a choice of 10 different “mixins” 9 different toppings, and 6 selections of crunch. Finally you are able to choose your dressing. My lunch friend was like a kid in a candy shop. She totally loved her Poke bowl, and was happy to have so many selections based on her diet constraints.
Overall, I think this restaurant has potential and may be suffering from growing pains. I will update you when I visit again.
